CVD and HPHT: two ways to grow a diamond

Lab-grown diamonds are grown in one of two ways. CVD builds carbon up from a gas, one thin layer at a time; HPHT recreates the intense heat and pressure under which diamonds form deep in the earth. Either way, the finished crystal has the same composition and optical properties as a natural diamond and cannot be told apart by eye or by standard gemological testing. The growth method is stated on the grading report, so you can check it when choosing a stone.

What to look for on the grading report

A lab-grown diamond report lists the carat, cut, color and clarity grades, and states separately that the stone was grown in a laboratory. Each grading lab applies its standards a little differently, so it pays to note which lab graded a stone as well as the grade itself. Many lab-grown diamonds also carry the report number laser-inscribed on the girdle, so you can match the paperwork to the stone. Each stone’s page shows the original report, a video and its measurements in millimeters.

How to read prices by carat

The carat table below shows the lowest price in each band among stones currently for sale, so it changes as stones sell and new ones arrive. Within a single band, cut, color, clarity and fluorescence can still move a lab-grown diamond’s price a long way. If your budget comes first, also compare a stone one band lower with a higher grade. Diameter grows more slowly than carat weight, so the size you see on the finger may not follow the order of the table.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Lab-Grown Diamond cost?
Right now Connerstone has 96,908 stones to compare, starting at $152. That is for D–E color, VS2 clarity or better; even at the same carat weight, the price varies with cut and grading lab.
What affects the price of a Lab-Grown Diamond?
At the same carat weight, price depends on cut grade, color, clarity, fluorescence and the grading lab. What you see and what the grade report says can differ, so check the actual video and millimeter measurements as well.
How is a lab-grown diamond different from a natural diamond?
A lab-grown diamond is grown in a controlled environment, but it has the same carbon crystal structure and optical properties as a natural diamond. It is not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite, and its growth method is stated on the grading report.
Are lab diamonds and lab-created diamonds the same as lab-grown diamonds?
Yes, only the name differs. Lab-grown, lab and lab-created diamonds all mean a diamond grown in a laboratory, and grading reports describe them the same way. Whichever name you search for, you can compare the same inventory on this page.
